Staff Paleontologists (Northern Great Plains)

Job Summary.

Paleo Solutions is seeking Staff Paleontologists to assist with construction monitoring, field surveys, fossil collection, data collection, and other field tasks as needed for a large project located in the northern Great Plains. These positions will be temporary seasonal positions and will be managed out of our Denver office. Exceptional job performance could potentially lead to full-time regular employment.

Compensation.

·       $20.00 to $22.00 per hour starting wage commensurate with experience.

Qualifications.

1.      Possession of a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in paleontology, geology or biology or similar degree that includes education and field training in paleontology and sedimentary geology. Extensive field experience in paleontology and sedimentary geology can substitute for the academic training.

2.      Previous paleontological construction monitoring experience is desirable, but training will be provided if the applicant lacks this experience.

3.      Good verbal and written communication skills, responsiveness to supervisor directions, the ability to closely follow instructions, attention to detail, organizational skills, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team. The ability to work independently is essential for this specific project.

4.      Outdoor experience including the ability to hike long distances (4-6 miles/day) and perform field work in rough terrain, extreme temperatures, and other adverse conditions.

5.      Proficiency with technology (smartphones, GPS receivers, tablets, computers).

6.      The ability to work long hours and drive long distances to and from the work location. A vehicle for use while working on the project will be provided.

7.     Possession of a valid driver’s license, current automobile insurance, and a good driving record.

Responsibilities.

1.      Conducting field work in rotations of 2-3 weeks at a time. Paleo Solutions will cover travel, lodging and meals during work rotations. Travel and lodging will be paid up front by Paleo Solutions, and meals will be reimbursed with receipts at the GSA rate.

2.      Construction monitoring, field surveys, and fossil collection.

3.      Detailed and accurate field data collection and daily progress reports (using Paleo Solutions’ proprietary data collection system) and other project related reporting as required, with an emphasis on stratigraphic documentation of project sites and fossil localities.

4.      Communicating with Paleo Solutions’ supervisors responsively and responding effectively to instructions. Excellent communication skills are a critical part of this job.

5.     Adherence to ethical business practices, professional standards, laws and regulations, and best practices in mitigation paleontology.

6.     Demonstrate the ability to follow instructions and capable dealing with a fast-paced scheduling changes.

7.     Demonstrate professionalism to colleagues and clients at all times

8.     Strict compliance with Paleo Solutions’ and project mandated safety procedures.
