NEW: Archaeologist needed in Philadelphia


Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a part-time as needed Archaeologist with 0-5 years of archaeological experience to assist with managing all phases of cultural resource projects throughout the United States with an emphasis on the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team including archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, environmental scientists, engineers and planners. The qualified candidate must be able to write at a professional level and present ideas in a well-thought out and comprehensive manner. The preferred candidate will enjoy a variety of working conditions ranging from field efforts to office analysis. 


Work will include travel – up to 50% of the time throughout the United States. Responsibilities will include conducting background research for projects; working as a field director; supervising field technicians; analysis of artifacts (both historic and pre-historic); report writing and analysis. The candidate must be experienced in standard archaeological field and analytical techniques for all phase of work. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Archaeological fieldwork, post-field analyses, documentation, and report writing relating to the identification and evaluation of archaeological resources,
  • Lead crews, including scheduling work and making individual or teamwork assignments and leading the instruction of others in the use of equipment, technology, and field methods;
  • Assists in writing archaeological reports and/or prepares archaeological site forms;
  • Works with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet JMT quality standards.

Required Skills: 

  • The qualified personnel must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Qualification Standards 36 CFR 61 as an Archaeologist.
  • Qualified applicants must have experience conducting fieldwork and writing reports at a professional level.
  • Experience with organizing and completing fieldwork is preferred.

 Required Experience: 

  • A Master’s Degree from an accredited school in Archaeology (or similar field).
  • Meets, or exceeds, the requirements for an Archaeologist under the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. Experience in eastern United States (or Mid-Atlantic) archaeology required.
  • Qualified applicants must have experience organizing and completing field work
  • Experience assisting with writing reports;
  • Experience in Phase I, II and III fieldwork;
  • Experience working with federal regulations including Section 106 and NEPA
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, GIS, and GPS applications
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be capable of renting a car

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with GIS and Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Experience with digital photography (including SLR cameras)
  • FHWA or ACHP Certified Section 106 Course
  • Experience with FCC 620/621 forms


Working Conditions:

The preferred candidate should enjoy working in the outdoors as required to complete job tasks. The job will require, but may not be limited to, certain physical demands while performing duties in the field. These physical requirements will include the ability to walk, stand, kneel, or bend for extended periods of time and be able to carry field equipment and supplies long distances. Field work may be conducted during any time of the year and may occur in a variety of weather and climate conditions, as needed. The candidate is not required to perform field work in hazardous weather conditions.

Work is performed in the field 50% of the time. Travel may include out-of-town work requiring driving and/or flying to project locations. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Out-of-town travel is expected.
