Seeking FT Cultural Resources Specialist - Houston, TX or Louisiana offices

Fenstermaker is seeking a Cultural Resources Specialist to join our team in Houston, TX or in one of our Louisiana based offices.

What does the job entail?

The Cultural Resources Specialist conducts archaeological archival research and desk-based assessments in addition to cultural resources investigations and excavations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting all aspects of archaeological field work, including field survey planning, site survey, site recordation, site testing and evaluations, monitoring, and data recovery.
  • Conducting excavation with shovels and other tools.
  • Developing and establishing protocol for conducting cultural resources work in LA, TX, AR, & MS.
  • Assisting with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of data using GPS units.
  • Conducting technical research and assist in preparing archaeological reports and site forms.
  • Analyzing and documenting prehistoric and historic sites and artifacts.
  • Working independently under supervision of a Project Manager, Principal Investigator, or Field Director.
  • Developing and maintaining a cultural resource information base for the field.
  • Performing archival research, testing, and evaluation.
  • Maintaining archaeological inventories.
  • Making presentations to the public, at workshops and other venues.
  • Completing field forms, drawing sketch maps, and preparing profile and plan view field drawings.
  • Washing, bagging, and labeling artifacts.
  • Consulting with the project team about laws and regulations concerning cultural resource issues.
  • Maintaining good working relationships with state and federal agency contacts and clients.
  • Field duties may include participation in Phase I and Phase II projects and may necessitate out-of-town travel.
  • Laboratory duties may include artifact processing, classification, and curation, artifact photography, database management, mapping, and report layout.

 

Am I qualified for this position?

  • Master’s Degree in Anthropology or Archaeology from an accredited university
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in historic and/or prehistoric archaeology; a graduate degree in Anthropology or a related field can substitute for 2 years of experience, or demonstrated equivalency of education and / or experience;
  • Must demonstrate completion, at a principal investigator level, a minimum of one (1) year of cultural resources management projects involving archaeological investigations and preparation of final reports consistent with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation (Projects as performed under the jurisdiction of the National Historic Preservation Act)
  • More than one (1) year of relevant field experience, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop;
  • Experience with NEPA and Section 106 preferred.
