Job Announcement: Archaeological Compliance Research Associate at Death Valley National Park

Archaeological Compliance Research Associate (Section 106)
Great Basin Institute / Death Valley National Park 

Description:
Working cooperatively with the National Park Service’s Death Valley National Park (DEVA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an (1) Archeological Compliance Research Associate (RA) to join our program and assist DEVA archaeology staff. The RA will conduct monitoring, produce the necessary archeological inventories and assist the Park Section 106 Coordinator with compliance documentation. As part of the analysis required by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for potential ground disturbing projects, a Section 106 of NHPA cultural resource evaluation must be completed to evaluate effects to federally owned historic and prehistoric sites. In order to complete these specialist reports, surveys for archaeological resources need to be completed for all proposed projects. The RA will also conduct cultural resources literature reviews and identify gaps in the Park’s data. 
The RA will support a variety of cultural resource projects which may include all stages of the archaeological survey process, which includes: pre-field review (search of archaeological databases to determine if the area had been surveyed before and if there are any known archaeological sites in the area), intensive archaeological pedestrian surveys (cultural properties will be fully inventoried, recorded, and GPS documented), site documentation, and development of the final reports.
Examples of needed skills include: experience with field monitoring; working knowledge of 36 CFR Part 800; writing NHPA consultation letters; file management; preparation of National Register Nominations and Determinations of Eligibility; preparation or contribution to MOAs and PAs; working as part of an interdisciplinary team; coordinating reviews with qualified cultural resource professionals; prioritizing workload; and tracking and communicating status of tasks.
 Compensation:   
o Rate of pay: up to $24.00/hour depending upon education and experience.
o Health, Dental, and Vision Insurance fully covered
o Paid leave and holidays
o Park housing may be available: Shared housing but single occupancy in rooms and no shared bathrooms until at least the end of the calendar year; no pets
 
 Timeline:  
o Up to one year appointment beginning August/September 2020, or upon availability and completion of a Department of Interior background investigation
o 40 hours per week; some overtime and weekend work may occasionally be required
 
Location:
Death Valley National Park is located in Nevada and California and boasts some of the hottest and driest climates, and lowest elevation in North America. A superlative desert of streaming sand dunes, snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted canyons and 3 million acres of wilderness. Home to the Timbisha Shoshone people and to plants and animals unique to the harshest desert.
Housing in the park may be available at an affordable rate; otherwise the closest available accommodations are in Pahrump or Beatty, Nevada (both approximately 1 hour away). 
Qualifications:
Technical Requirements-
o Master’s degree in Archaeology or related field, required;
o Knowledge of 36 CFR Part 800;
o Ability to understand, implement and adhere to Secretary of the Interior professional qualification standards;
o Ability to understand, implement and adhere to the 2008 Nationwide Programmatic Agreement between the NPS and NCSHPO;
o Ability to utilize ArcGIS and/or AutoCAD software to build maps, organize and manage data, and manipulate data layers;
o Field experiences related to archaeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies – in particular, historic and prehistoric Mojave Desert archaeology desirable;
o Ability to understand, implement and adhere to established data collection, inventory, recording, and monitoring protocols;
o Capacity to collect and maintain field data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other resources staff (GBI or NPS);
o Experience completing archeological site forms (or portions of site forms) and/or entering site form data in to database programs;
o Experience preparing, reviewing and writing reports; 
o Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and electronic field data collection; experience post-processing field data, a plus;
o Read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass;
o Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely operate and maintain a 4WD vehicle on and off paved roads;
o Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team focused on accomplishing mutual goals and communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
o Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans and schedules;
o Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented; and 
o Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, camp in the backcountry for consecutive days, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry a heavy pack in excess of 35-45 lbs, and be in overall good physical condition; prior experience working in the desert southwest, or similar desert climates, desirable. 
Successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
