Archaeological Monitor(s) - SD

Alpine Archaeology

Alpine Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (Alpine) is accepting applications for at least one Archaeological Monitor.  This position is a temporary, full-time position in South Dakota and Montana. Wages are based on experience, but range from $18 to $22 per hour. A $55/day food allowance (no receipts required) and lodging (one person per room, if possible) are paid until project completion. Company transportation is provided. Position begins in mid-August, with all likelihood of two months of employment. 

Primary Responsibilities:

·         Monitor ongoing construction activities in culturally sensitive areas

·         Document previously unrecorded sites, features, and artifacts using Trimble GPS technology, field forms, and digital photography

·         Collaborate and coordinate with construction contractors and work directly with heavy equipment operators

·         Collaborate with representatives from the Native American community

·         Provide timely, clear, and effective communication


·         MA/MS degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or related field

  • Sufficient experience in CRM, preferably involving Section 106 compliance projects, to meet federal and state agency permitting requirements
  • An ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in inclement weather, rough terrain, and/or high elevations.
  • Proficiency at the identification, recordation, and evaluation of archaeological sites of prehistoric and historical archaeological sites.
  • Have good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel. 
  • Proficiency with software such as MS Word, Access, and Excel

·         Experience with Pipeline construction monitoring (preferred)

Overtime will occur on this project and compensation will be commensurate with experience.
