On Call - Cultural Resources Field Technicians Orange County/LA California


Cogstone is always looking for well qualified Archaeologists located in California. Archaeologists may conduct pre-field research, field surveys, and site testing using a variety of reference materials as well as search areas of proposed projects for evidence of historic and prehistoric remains. Archaeologists also determine the exact location of sites and mark them on maps and aerial photographs and ensure that work assignments are carried out in a safe and timely manner according to established standards and procedures. Must be able to stand for ten hours although most projects work eight hour days. Ability to work well with construction crews and colleagues and to follow specific protocols is necessary. Archaeologists may clean, inventory, catalog and photograph artifacts and may also work in GIS.



  • California experience

  • BA in Anthropology or a closely related field.

  • Ability to conduct field work for long hours, in possible inclement weather conditions and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds

  • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and their own vehicle


  • Confidence in the construction environment

  • Proficiency in use of tablets and standard office software

  • Excellent field notes

  • Experience in paleontology a plus

  • Ability to work independently with a diverse, multi-disciplinary team

  • Self-motivated with strong initiative
