Job Responsibilities:

  • The individual will be responsible for overall management and direct supervision, including fieldwork, of all types of archaeological field and archival projects, ranging from small local surveys through large, multi-year and multi-state energy projects.
  • Duties will include marketing; proposal development; client coordination; regulatory and tribal consultation.
  • Development and implementation of budgets, research designs, work plans, schedules, analyses and reporting.
  • The Senior Archaeologist/ Principal Investigator will work closely with the Albuquerque Cultural Team of archaeologists, environmental staff, permitting specialists, and managers in TRC's Planning, Permitting, and Licensing practice.
  • We are looking for an individual enthusiastic about their work with a strong commitment to client service and technical excellence.
  • The successful candidate must be able to work well with existing clients and establish their own relationship with them.
  • The candidate will have the potential to bring in new work and possess solid relationships with the SHPO, THPOs, Cultural Properties Review Committee, and other Federal, State, and Municipal Government archaeological staff in New Mexico and throughout the Southwest in general.
  • Develop working relationships with TRC cultural resource staff in other offices, particularly in Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming.
  • The position will include regular travel away from the home office.

Basic Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in Anthropology with a specialty of Archaeology (must meet the Secretary of the Interior's guidelines), Ph.D. preferred.
  • Five or more years of experience supervising archaeological projects in New Mexico, with experience in neighboring Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, and Texas highly desirable.
  • Be permittable on the New Mexico State Permit (including burial and historian highly desirable), most of the National Forests in New Mexico, BIA, BLM (particularly the SE, NW, and NE regions), and Navajo Nation. Being permittable in neighboring states is highly desirable.
  • Excellent personnel and management skills with an established supervisory track record.
  • Experience and ability to serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) for projects and able to obtain permits from the State of New Mexico, BLM, BIA, National Forests, Navajo Nation, and adjoining states as needed.
  • Ability to work on several projects simultaneously and to multitask.
  • Responsible for training crew chiefs and crew members for a variety of tasks.
  • Ability to work harmoniously and productively with other TRC staff and clients is essential.
  • The PI is expected to be professionally active in archaeology and willing to attend and participate in regional and national conferences.
  • Knowledge and experience with Section 106, NEPA, and other state and federal regulations and experience with other states environmental review processes and requirements.
  • Ability to work closely with engineers and other technical specialists as part of a larger project team.
  • Provides business development collaboration with existing clients and identifies new opportunities to expand services within the TRC client base.
  • Familiarity with digital field technology (e.g., Fulcrum app, Trimble, GPS, total station, etc.) and GIS applications and software.
  • Ability to write scientifically sound technical reports of high quality and successful proposals in a timely manner, with a track record of meeting deadlines.
