The Archaeology and Collections Branch of the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) seeks applications for a field director position. The FCPA archaeological program is public, engaging the interested public and working with volunteers and interns with a range of experience. Duties consist of oversight of field investigations (Phase I, II, and III) and supervision of field technicians and a crew chief.  

The field director may be responsible for one or more field projects running concurrently.  The field director coordinates with principal investigators and the lab director to establish priorities, assign staff, and ensure fieldwork is completed correctly and efficiently.  The field director will author or co-author technical reports, assist with volunteer tasking, conduct public outreach, and assist principal investigators with administrative tasks.  

Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate their ability to report on archaeological projects to Virginia Department of Historic Resources standards. Knowledge of ESRI products, e.g. ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS applications strongly preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with an MA in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field, however experience in a field director role may be substituted for education for strongly qualified applicants. 

The position is limited to 1560 working hours, or approximately nine months, per calendar year. The position is not eligible for paid holidays, paid vacation, or retirement.  Funding for relocation is not available.  A range of medical benefits are available for purchase through Fairfax County at a subsidized cost.   Compensation is commensurate with education and experience.  All work is local; no per diem is available.  In general, the fieldwork schedule is Tuesday through Saturday.
