Full-time Archaeologist Technician with ArcGIS Experience - Eden Prairie, MN

In Situ Archaeological Consulting, LLC, of Eden Prairie, MN, is accepting resumes/CVs  for a Staff Archaeologist with ArcGIS experience. This is a permanent full-time and immediate position. This will require daily commute to the main office in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field. 
  • University-based archaeological field school and/or demonstrated equivalent combination of education, skills, knowledge, abilities and experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equipment and technology used to perform recording of archaeological field data. 
  • Knowledge of basic field excavation techniques; knowledge of basic archaeological laboratory techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience using ArcGIS software and mapping techniques. 
  • Project-specific certification and licensure may be required, if applicable.
  • Prefer 1 to 3 years’ experience in a similar capacity conducting field work.
Job Description: This is an entry-level position. An archaeological performs unskilled and semi- skilled tasks at archaeological field sites under the direct supervision of archaeological crew chiefs and the general supervision of a Principal Investigator. In addition, the ideal candidate will have experience using ArcGIS to create field work maps and report figures. The responsibilities and duties of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Conduct survey, testing, data recovery and/or lab work with supervision from a field or lab supervisor.
  • Keep records and maintain the relevant State Historic Preservation Officer documentation pertaining to archaeological resources.
  • Provide regulatory compliance support for Federal, state, municipal and/or commercial clients. 
  • Perform fieldwork such as test unit excavation, controlled surface collection, feature excavation, GPS data collection, and artifact recovery.
  • Perform archaeological documentation such as completing field excavation forms and artifact bag lists, producing field drawings and maps, taking photographs, and recording GPS data.
  • Provide logistical support to field supervisors (assembles and maintains equipment, organizes supplies and paperwork, etc.).
  • Perform lab work such as artifact washing, artifact labeling, and data entry.
  • Comply with all In Situ safety standards to ensure a safe work environment for all. 
  • Work with technical field, lab and office staff, managers and administrative staff to ensure that projects meet In Situ quality standards.
  • Create maps and report figures using ArcGIS.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
The incumbent will be regularly required to:
  • Pass a pre-employment substance abuse test. 
  • Walking: Stand and traverse a varied outdoor terrain up to 5 miles per day. 
  • Carrying Weight & Lifting: Move and transport equipment with loads up to 50 pounds using hands and/or a backpack while hiking. 
  • Stooping, Kneeling, Crouching & Crawling: Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to perform manual soil excavations using a hand shovel or trowel. Repetitive motion to excavate compacted and soft soil to depth of 3.3 feet, crouching and/or crawling under fencing may be fervent. 
  • Climbing, Balancing & Reaching: Reach with hands and arms; may include ascend/descend fencing. 
  • Handling & Feeling: Use hands and fingers to operate a shovel, sift soil, operate testing equipment, electronic devices, and safety equipment. 
  • Talking & Hearing: Frequent communication and exchange of information in written and verbal forms. Hearing, with/without audio correction devices, must be adequate to identify potential work hazards. 
  • Vision & Small: Vision abilities including close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception and ability to adjust focus with/without corrected vision devices. Ability to identify plant or animal specimens. 
Work Environment of Position
While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent may be exposed to work near a pipeline/utility right-of-way, fumes, dust, gases, odors, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, and varying terrain. 
  • Climate: Constantly works in outdoor weather conditions with varying seasonal temperatures. Winter temperatures average 2˚F and may fall below 0 ˚F. Summer temperatures average 70˚F  and may reach 100 ˚F  and above. 
  • Plants & Animals: Incumbent may encounter plans and animals while working outdoors. May include, for example, poison ivy, poison oak, wasps, bees, snakes, etc. 
  • Terrain: Incumbent will be required to hike through varied terrain including, for example, tall and low grasses and weeds, around trees, near wetlands, over hills, over and around fencing, near roadways, and through mud.
