New here, looking for introductory book on archaeology
Javert1997
Hello,
I'm new to the forum, and was wondering if any of you could recomend a good book for someone who is interested in archaeology but has not formal education. Should I pick up a textbook or is there another book to get me started on the fundamentals. Thank you for your help.

Welcome to archaeologyfieldwork.com.
One of my favorite general archy books through the years has been Jane McIntosh's The Practical Archaeologist: How We Know What We Know About the Past (ISBN-10: 0816039518).
There are also some suggestions in the following message thread:

Hope this helps. Good luck and happy reading,
Jennifer

Jane McIntosh's "The Practical Archaeologist" is a superb overview of archaeology for the lay reader. Although I don't have much of a scientific bent, I have always been fascinated by archaeology (probably too many Agatha Christie novels), and I treated myself to this many years ago to see if the real thing was as interesting as I imagined it to be.
This is a beautifully designed book. Color photographs, black-and-white photos, engravings, and sketches are skillfully combined with an easy-to-read text. This is an excellent introduction to archaeology for anyone who has even a remote interest in the subject--it's difficult to put down once you begin reading it. Highly recommended!
