Switching interests! From Mesoamerica to Geoarchaeology
Orangabug
Hello All-
I am a former grad student who has recently decided to shift my interests toward Geoarchaeology. While in grad school, I realized that I was more interested in the "science" of fieldwork rather than doing area/cultural studies. My interests are pretty broad right now. Ideally, I would like learn a little of everything (GIS, trace elements, GPR, sediments, soils, etc). I have found a few graduate programs that offer degrees in Geoarchaeology, but I am not sure if I am ready to apply this fall (for a number of different reasons).
What steps do you suggest I take to begin a new journey in Geoarchaeology?

Hi!
I am not sure how much research you've done on Geoarch programs. I am undergrad student with in archaeology and have done my minor in geology, and trying to research schools because I have an interest in geoarch too. From my searches, I have found that Washington State University in Pullman, WA probably has one of the larger grad programs focusing on geoarchaeology in the West.
My best bet would be to look for programs that incorporate the basic courses in Geology with your study. (historical, petrology/petrography, sedimentology, stratigraphy, mineralogy, and some basic geochemistry) that may seem like a long list, but it is used as a base.
anyways, good luck to you! I am in the same boat.

I'm also looking at geoarch masters programs, not 100% committed though as I have a wide range of interests in the field. One which interested me was University of Arizona's. The degree comes from the Geosciences department however, and I wonder if that would hurt me in the job hunt. Anyone know?

I have been doing some preliminary research and have found this website:
http://rock.geosociety.org/arch/GSA_GRAD.htm
This is a pretty comprehensive list of graduate programs that offer either geoarch or arch and geology or geosciences. Good luck to both of you in the future!

I'm just glad to see so many of you looking at this field - something that we definitely need more of. Good Luck to you all :D

Hello Dmack!
Are you in the field of Geoarchaeology? How did you get started and where did you earn your degree? All of us would love to hear from someone who could give us an insider look into this world! Hope to hear back!

Sorry, I am not a geomorph, but have worked with several over the years and appreciate what they can add to my work - and what I have learned from them.
The Society for American Archaeology has a geomorphology/archaeology interest group. I would suggest you look at their information.
