seeking volunteer opportunities for older folks

moulin

Hello. I am interested in finding volunteer opportunities for older, non-students. (that does't mean excluding students ). I've been on a half dozen archael. digs over the years (as a journalist) but would like to go on some others but have no interest in getting academic credit, etc. Are some digs more appropriate?

(esp. interested in Mayan or European subjects) [/list]

I would recommend that you keep an eye on the Arch Volunteer Opps forum at this site and that you consider, if you can afford it, joining Earthwatch. Joining local, or even not-so-local historical and archaeological societies is also a great way to network for volunteer opportunities.

I know that you stated an interest in Mayan and European cultures, but if you are willing to remain stateside, a good (and free) program to consider is the US Forest Service's Passport in Time. I've been on a few volunteer PIT projects and have found that many of the volunteers are older folks. It's actually pretty popular amongst retirees in particular, and many of them travel around the country in RVs from project to project (sounds like an appealing retirement to me!).

Their website is http://www.passportintime.com/

Good luck,

Jennifer

I was going to suggest PIT as well. You can also find many field schools that might be happy to have an experienced volunteer along as well - you experieince might be a good addition. Probably depends on what their insurance will allow. Check with any project that interests you, you might be surprised at where you can volunteer
