Red Church educational workcamp, Bulgaria

Project dates: May 31st - June 13th 2010

Project highlights: Early Christianity in the Balkans / Eastern Roman architecture

The Red Church is considered an excellent example of Early Christian architecture. Experts in Ancient and Byzantine art and architecture are impressed by the beauty of its frescoes and the church's innovative for its time architectural concept. Sadly, only a part of the original complex is still relatively well preserved, and despite the efforts of the Bulgarian state to preserve this unique monument, the Red Church is slowly turning into ruins. Archeologistica believes it is important to raise awareness about the fate that awaits this jewel of early Christian architecture if the appropriate action for its preservation is not undertaken. This would involve creating international awareness and taking action towards resolving problems related to the Red Church’s preservation.

By participating in the Educational Workcamp you will be helping with the acquisitions of new knowledge about early Christian architecture in the Eastern Roman Empire, as well as helping us preserve an important part of the world’s cultural heritage.

The project focuses specifically on improving the immediate surroundings of the Church in order to facilitate further work on the monument, consisting mainly of its restoration and conservation.

The Educational Workcamp consists of two practically distinct, yet theoretically related parts :
1) work on the site itself, consisting of cleaning the terrain, and graphic documentation of the monument, and
2) an educational camp consisting of lectures and excursions focusing on the main theme of the project – Early Christianity in the Balkans and Eastern Roman architecture.

Participation fee: 799 EUR (discount available)
