Using bore diameter for dating pipe stem fragments

How reliable is this REALLY?  Does it only apply to to pipestems of colonial age?  Ive been using Hume's dates and diameters, but I have a hard time believing it for every pipestem.  Plus Hume stops at 1800, so what about any pipestems after 1800?  do they not apply to his chart?  THanks for any input.
