INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a PhD intern for Summer 2010].  The INL Cultural Resource Management Program is seeking an intern who will provide technical support to a team of archaeologists exploring human use of riverine and lacustrine landscape features from the late Pleistocene through recent times. Expertise is needed to assist INL researchers with understanding the broad formation processes and natural history of the Pleistocene lake shorelines and adjacent aeolian dune formations. In addition, the applicant will assist with archaeological test excavations and apply their expertise to interpret more localized archaeological site stratigraphy.

This internship is an educational enhancement opportunity and is a full time, paid position.

INL EDUCATION PROGRAMS:

Student internships enhance the education of students in support of the Department of Energy's mission to provide a continuum of opportunities to the nation's students.  The majority of internships fall in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  However, the INL is a multi-discipline laboratory which utilizes all areas (i.e. finance, legal, IT, etc.) to support its mission.  The number of available internships depends on INL project funding.  These internship opportunities are intended provide an intensive introduction to mission support areas through the guidance of experienced mentors.

The INL is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's mission in nuclear energy research, science, and national defense.  With 3,500 scientist, researchers and support staff, the laboratory works with national and international governments, universities and industry partners to discover new science and develop technologies that underpin the nation's nuclear and renewable energy, national security and environmental missions.

    Qualifications
    Required Qualifications:
- Full-time student status.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- The applicant must be working toward, or already have a graduate degree in fluvial geomorphology, geoarchaeology, or closely related field with the necessary kowledge and skill to complete assigned work. Required skills include standard field practices in fluvial geomorphology and the ability to extract pertinent resource data from historic maps, aerial photographs, and GIS technology.
-GERT and site access training is required.
-Will be required to withstand prolonged heat exposure, must have physical endurance to perform manual labor, and will also do some excavating.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Must be U.S .citizen.
-Applicants possessing previous work experience with GPS, GIS, writing skills, and basic knowledge of archaeological field methods will be more competitive.
   
    Environmental, Safety & Health
    Must be familiar with, and comply with all relevant health and safety requirements.  Must be knowledgeable of emergency action policies and procedures, methods for reporting/resolving work practices or conditions to available cognizant professionals.
