field work volunteer

esthere

I am a conservator applying to graduate school in archaeology and I am looking for any project to work as a volunteer. Does anyone know about any opportunity?

Just a friendly suggestion - I would edit the title of your message to better reflect what you're looking for, such as "seeking volunteer archaeology fieldwork opportunity in Maine for summer 2010".  Narrow it down in your subject header and message to exactly what you are interested in, even as far as a potential time commitment, archaeological period, etc.

If you click on the 'volunteer' tag in your message or the one displayed on the archaeologyfieldwork.com home page, you will see a list of messages posted here with that subject.  Some of them do include volunteer opportunities.  Keep in mind that some of these are volunteer opportunities where the organization running the project expects you to pay to participate (usually these are the projects outside the U.S.).

If travel isn't an issue, there are free opportunities to volunteer with various branches of the U.S. government.  One such program is the Forest Service's Passport in Time. You can also try a keyword search on Serve.gov. The National Park Service often accepts volunteers, and sometimes information for these programs is available on the individual park websites.

You may also be interested in checking out listings from the Archaeological Institute of America's Archaeological Fieldwork Opportunities Bulletin.

If you prefer to stay closer to home, it's worth checking out any local and state archaeological societies.  They may have ongoing projects, or through networking with members you may be able to find out about other opportunities.  All in all, it might take some research and creative Googling, but I'm sure you can something that fits your needs and schedule.

I hope this helps.  Good luck to you,

Jennifer
