What are your recommended books on historic preservation and architectural history? Any texts, in particular, that would be good for a student of these subjects?

I can start off with a few titles that I've found quite useful. In particular, I've found myself over the years frequently re-reading and referring to the first two texts on this list...

Field Guide to American Houses by Virginia McAlester and Lee McAlester

Visual Dictionary of American Domestic Architecture by Rachel Carley

Identifying American Architecture by John J.-G. Blumenson

American Architecture: An Illustrated Encyclopedia by Cyril M. Harris

For an interesting introduction to many topics in the field, anything by Tom King is always a good read and educational - although I know many that do not always agree with what Tom has to say - he always has a lot to say.

Tom was involved with a lot of the original work that created our field, and his 1977 book (along with other authors) was the standard introductury text on Archaeology/Historic Preservation law for many years (Academic Press). Today I think most of his work is published by Altamira Press.

I'll second the recommendation for Tom King. His books on Historic Preservation Law are interesting and easy to read, and a definite boon to my library.
