North American Archaeology Lab
ANNOUNCEMENT
The North American Archaeology Department of the American Museum of Natural History is now accepting applications for our Summer Lab Internship. Our Lab Interns will staff the North American Archaeology (NAARCH) Lab located at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The NAARCH Lab handles, stores, and analyzes a wide variety of artifacts from an extensive temporal and spatial range. Typically interns have the opportunity to work with materials from our current excavations in coastal Georgia. Material types commonly handled include Native American ceramics, shell tools and lithics. Additionally, interns will have the opportunity to assist in the maintenance of our archaeological archive. Archival tasks include the digitization, organization, and storage of documents, maps, slides, and photos from related archaeological fieldwork.
Individuals interested in joining the NAARCH Lab staff should be highly motivated, patient, and detail-oriented. We will be accepting applications from upper level undergraduates, college graduates, and graduate students. Individuals who have not yet completed their sophomore year need not apply unless they have extensive experience that off-sets their lack of academic training. Prior archaeological experience in either the field or in the lab is not necessary, but may be a factor in our selection.
Lab Researchers are unpaid, volunteer-level positions. Course credit can be offered to those individuals currently enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning. The term of employment will be from mid-June to the end of August. The museum asks 2-3 days a week from its Lab Staff, available hours run Monday through Friday.
Applications will be accepted until April 1st, 2010. Interested applicants should send a resume including references and a 1-page statement of purpose to either gmahar@amnh.org or rcajigas@amnh.org. Applications may also be sent via mail to:
Ginessa Mahar
Anthropology Department
American Museum of Natural History
Central Park West @ 79th Street

The statement of purpose should briefly outline the applicant’s prior experience in archaeology as well as their future plans within the discipline. Individuals with questions should feel free to email Rachel Cajigas (rcajigas@amnh.org) at the NAARCH Lab.
