Field School Bradford Kaims Wetlands project
BamburghArchaeology
Bamburgh Research Project is offering the opportunity for students and volunteers to take part in a two-week excavation at Bradford Kaims, from the 24th May to the 4th of June 2010. Apply now via our website 'getting involved' section:
www.bamburghresearchproject.co.uk
The Bradford Kaims are located in North Northumberland, England, less than forty kilometres from the Scottish Border. It is surrounded by an extensive wetland that formed in the Late Glacial and was a large lake system throughout the Holocene. Many sites are known in this region, from Mesolithic and Neolithic scatters, to Bronze Age cairns and votive deposits, Iron Age hillforts and Medieval villages.
This project seeks to survey the lake and undertake exploratory excavations of sites from different periods. Training in survey and excavation, as well as palaeoenvironmental sampling, will be provided on sites that offer extraordinarily good conditions for the preservation of archaeological remains. Also, there will be opportunities to learn about material culture such as lithic material and ceramics.
The two-week excavation will be the first phase of a pilot study for a landscape project. Prices and accommodation arrangements are the same as those in place for the Bamburgh Castle excavation. Students and volunteers who wish to participate in the excavations at Bradford Kaims as well as those at Bamburgh Castle, can carry through into the castle excavation season which starts on the 6th June. Please refer to our website for the latest details:
