Classical archaeology

Nikos23

Hello, this is my first post! I'm currently seeking a B.A. in history with a minor in archaeology. Upon finishing that, I'm going to pursue a M.A. in classical archaeology. I have being doing research trying to find good schools in the U.S. that offer M.A. in classical archaeology, and I have found a few, but I would like to know if anyone can suggest a good school? Also another question that I have, when do you choose your area of focus? thank you!

Nikos, (Ellinas eisai?)

the sooner the better for your area of focus! Schools like students who know what there interest are and if there interest is something which the school or a Professor has an interest in. The best thing to do is figure out what you want to do your Thesis on and then find professors who have been involved in that type of work.Learn what the professors current or previous work is so that when you talk to them you can make a good impression. Then send an e-mail to that professor and tell him or her of your interest in that work and in attending that university.

There are several good schools but I really believe the best school is not necessarily the "best" one. The best school would be the one which has professors doing work in your area of interest or specialization area.

Do you know Ancient Greek or Latin and or modern Greek, German or French? One or the other of the ancient languages and one of the modern is pretty much a pre-requisite for acceptance into a Classical program.

Good luck!

Classarch (nai Ellinas eimai!)

Thank you for your reply! When you say the thesis paper, do you mean the senior thesis? or in the M.A. level? I do speak modern Greek, and I do have a knowledge in Ancient Greek, and a little bit of French.

Thanks!

I am referring to an M.A Thesis. Do some research and figure out what aspect of Classical Archaeology do you want to deal with. I am assuming it is going to be on Greece, but do you want to deal with Burials, Architecture, Houses, Sanctuaries or do you want to lean more anthropologically and study the daily lives of the people, etc. What area of Greece specifically area you interested in and what time period. Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic or Byzantine

Apo pou eisai? Se pio sxoleio pas? Eimai miso Ellinas, pleura miteras. I am more of a Classical archaeologist but unfortunately didn't have a university to attend to study Classics. But most of my off time is spent on reading Ancient Greek history books.I am currently in my final semester of my Master in Archaeology and Heritage. I am going to do my Thesis on a Classical Greece topic probably dealing with the Mani (Southern Peloponnese) and its cultural connection with Sparta. Haven't narrowed it down yet.
