Resume help

Dwarmour

I just wanted to get some opinions on the structure of my resume/cv.  I am trying to put my best foot forward this season to get the hell out of retail ;-0 What do some of you look for in a resume.  I added a skills section but still dont know if im being specific enough.  I didn't think the description under my employers was enough.  Here is the link:

It seems pretty standard to me, the resume' part that is.

You may want to tone down the language with regards to your current employment.

"Unfortunately, I have been unemployed off and on this year and was forced to acquire a job as a manager at an Abercrombie, of which I am not proud of."

I would be a bit more positive.  Something like:  "Due to the volitile employment market over the last year, I was forced to acquire a management position at a popular retail chain.  Though it has increased my effectiveness in management positions, it is not the industry that sparks my interest.  As such, I am seeking an opportunity to return to archaeology."

Or something like that.  That was just off the top of my head.   I certainly understand your plight.  I had to spend a year making 8 bucks an hour at a popular shipping and copy giant.  Though I hated every moment I was still proud of my hard work and sacrifice to keep myself and my wife alive.

Try to keep things positive.

The structure and content of your resume' seems fine to me.  You may want to mention your familiarity with GPS devices.

Ok, thanks I will definitely fix that.  I just didn't even think of the negativity.

There are a few ways to improve this.

Any writing skills? Senior thesis? Basically I see you have sufficient experience to be a tech but have not stated anywhere what level of position you are seaking.  You should try for a crew chief position or once you get a tech job start asking to be be able to lead a crew.

Also no one cares what your GPA was.  You are not trying to get into grad school. You may want to discuss your roll on each of these projects.  Tech, handling maps, or leading crews.

Under skills remove the Phase I-III you already said you did that and it is not a skill in the sence that you can use a total station or have experience using arc map.  Its more experience related.

Also navigation and grid layout are basic field techniques. All tech should be able to do that.  So keep skills to techinical stuff like types of computer programs you are familiar with and advanced equipement.

During the pipeline testing did you ever get to record historic structures?  If so state that. Often compoanies need people to assist with architectural surveys and its good to be cross trained.

Finally you should tell people you are available for travel.  It seems that techs today all want instant high paying jobs and only work in the lab. People need to remember that CRM is a very difficult field to achieve success in.  People who are flexible and willing to move can often find positions. I suggest you look at the ROPA website or local SHPOs office and find every company that works in your area.  Send them a vitae and follow upon with a  phone call.  If you dont have success in a  few weeks call them again.  I used to get vitae all the time and when I went to hire I would start at the top of the pile untill I found what I was looking for.

Good luck
