Archaeologists search Fort Gordon for lost graves

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Miles down Fort Gordon's Range Road, the blacktop gives way to a white sandy pass that cuts through the thick pine forest.

The tires on Robert Drumm's pickup appear to slide a bit as he heads deeper through the trees, where the pines give way to hardwoods.

It's there - in a spot indistinguishable from any other in the vast wooded expanse that makes up the post's interior - that Army researchers are looking for the remains of people who lived, and died, in the long-gone community of Pinetucky.

"Based on our plots, there are 22 other sites like this that are potential cemeteries," said Drumm, the chief of the Fort Gordon Natural Resources Branch."

I always wondered what type of historic sites were out in those woods. I probably drove the other soldiers crazy at Fort Gordon and Fort Jackson when we were in the field, as I was always stopping to check out artifact scatters. ;>
