Department of Interior archaeologists have been working to protect vulnerable
archaeological sites on lands threatened by the oil spill. At least 8
national parks, 30 national wildlife refuges, and 28 state parks and
preserves ring the Gulf and may be affected by oil coming ashore.
...Archaeologists will be needed during clean-up to protect sites from

There are literally sites everywhere along the Gulf Coast, including many shell mound sites. So many that haven't even been reported yet. Lots of very early historic ones also.

I wonder if they couldn't just cover some of them with plastic sheeting, then cover that with sand?
