From the ASNJ list:
Blairstown Historic Society
Archaeological Field School
The Blairstown Historic Society, together with Ridge & Valley Conservancy, is offering a two week Archaeological Field School from August 2nd through August 13th. The Field School is open to individuals 18 and older, and is limited to 20 participants. The fee for participation is $175 per person. Interested individuals must have a valid immunization of tetanus within the last 10 years. All participants will be required to sign an insurance liability waiver. Participants should wear adequate protective shoes, such as boots; steel-toed would be a plus. Work gloves and a hat will also be needed. Sunscreen and bug spray are recommended. Participants are urged to bring a digital camera, if possible. All archeological equipment and supplies for the field school will be provided by the Blairstown Historic Society. The Field School will be run by Archaeologist, Marie Lorraine Pipes, MA, RPA, ABD, SUNY Buffalo, NY. Other organizers of the Program will be Gary S. McGowan, Archaeological Conservator, MA, SUNY, NY, and Nadia Maczaj, Archaeologist, MA, HhhhNJ.
The proposed Archaeological investigation is an early 19th century iron furnace, located on property within the holdings of the Ridge & Valley Conservancy. The Ridge & Valley Conservancy has graciously offered to allow Archaeological investigation of the site. Although the investigation will be focusing on the early industrial aspects of Blairstown history, it is also a potential site for both pre and historic settlement remains.
The Field School will introduce participants to basic field procedures, including surveying, mapping, photography and excavation techniques including shovel tests, units and feature identification. Participants will learn about profiling, gridding, photography, drawing and stratigraphic analysis. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in lab procedures for the processing, labeling and identifying of materials recovered during the excavation phase. A typical daily schedule will involve excavation during the morning and early afternoon followed by lab work in the afternoon. Artifacts will be labeled and bagged in the field and brought to the lab for subsequent processing and analysis. Archaeological field work is weather dependent. Therefore, daily schedules may change to accommodate periods of rain. Lab work may be done on rainy days. We expect all participants to have the opportunity to experience all aspects of the program, both field and laboratory.
