550 Ancient Greek Places+ 10th Edition

That is an ever-growing list of ancient Greek places, where ruins are visible from the air. In almost every case, at least something of the Greek presence is visible, but occasionally not. This list spans the Minoan and Mycenaean periods up to the end of the Hellenistic age. No Roman places are represented. Also included are the sites of various contemporary cultures which were moderately to heavily Hellenized, such as the Lycians, Carians, and Pisidians.

And views of Chersonessos like this:

Any comments, corrections, requests, or suggestions?

Are you doing all this work yourself? If so GREAT JOB!

Apollonius

I am, and thanks!

Some of those places were as easy as entering the coordinates from wikipedia into google earth, but some of them have been really hard to track down. In those cases I have to do anywhere from a little research to quite a bit.

But you know I love it. Somebody else got to discover these places in person, but finding them on google earth is...the next best thing? Well it's fun, anyway. :p

And I don't think I'm even halfway finished. I just found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_archaeological_sites_by_country

I'm at 209 places right now, and I haven't even STARTED on that lot yet!

Good thing it's a labor of love...

I hate to do this to you at this point, but do you think you could color code the pins to particular ruling eras or other temporal scheme? With a key at hand it would be interesting to watch the ebb and flow of Greek/Minoan/etc. influence across space.

Post ID#18578 - replied 3/9/2011 3:51 PM

Apollonius

Yes! I should have posted a key with this from the first post. Sorry about that!

Look in the first post, I've made a key and added it. ;-)

Sorry for updating again so soon, it usually takes me a much longer time to compile these, and even if it doesn't, I generally wait at least until it's moved from the front page to update. It's these guys' fault: Uber motherlode of Lycian, Cilician, Pamphilian, and Carian places. Yell at them. And please tell them they are amazing for me. I'm going to bed.

Oh, and I'll update the key and main images when I wake up.

FireArch, I think I missed the point of what you were trying to say. If I understand you correctly, I don't think there's a way to apply a scheme like that without copying the KMZ file, renaming it, and changing a lot more than just the color of the pins. Some pins would have to be deleted completely, others would have to move to a new location.

Still, with the way it is now you can sort of get an idea, though not to such an extent. A large enough number of Minoan and Mycenaean places were long lost before the rise of Greek culture, so they can represent themselves. Not so with the regions of Asia Minor, however. Those changed quite often, by war or treaty, and it's sometimes hard to ascribe only one region to some places. Look at Kibyra, for instance. I still honestly have no clue whether it should ultimately be considered pisidian, Carian, Lydian, or Phrygian. Apparently it's been all of them at one point or another.

Not to mention the fact that the vast majority of Asia Minor had become Persian, and had remained that way until Alexander the Great.

But I agree that an entire series of KMZ files, one for each epoch, would be amazing to see.

No worries Apollonius, I appreciate the limitations of the technology. There's probably something available in the professional version of Google Earth, but there is no need to go down that road. It would be possible to storyboard the trends using a static picture and add and delete or change cultures (pins) frame by frame, making a movie of it, but that's a different technology and I'm sure a lot of investment of time. Needless to say though, what you have above is really cool.

Apollonius

I would love to do that, but the full version of Google Earth is about 1,000 bucks. >_> I'd love to try something like a timeline over a static image, but I don't know if I'm up to that challenge. :p That would be a lot of work! But I agree, I'd love to see that.

Whew! That was quite an update! the 11th edition is looking no less epic so far...

Oh! @ FireArch - I have discovered a key element of google Earth that might help with what we were discussing. I organized my places in this latest update, so that they are all grouped according to region/ethnicity. I could, theoretically, create folders for "Bronze Age", "Classical", "Hellenistic", etc. so that each could be viewed individually, but in lieu of making new places for every place that spans multiple eras, I can't find a way to switch the settings of a place to change according to...well, anything. :(

However, another great thing about organizing the places like I have in this update is that you can now double-click on a folder, and it will display a general overview of all the places in that folder. This is also handy for easily viewing only the Greek places, or only the Minoan and Mycenaean, etc.

Well it's good to be back. :)
