Stone Age carving may be ancient sex toy

It's not the first time that such a phallic object has been found from the ancient world

Sex toys have come a long way since the Stone Age — but then again, perhaps not as much as we might think.

Last week, an excavation in Sweden turned up an object that bears the unmistakable look of a penis carved out of antler bone. Though scientists can't be sure exactly what this tool was used for, it's hard not to leap to conclusions.

"Your mind and my mind wanders away to make this interpretation about what it looks like — for you and me, it signals this erected-penis-like shape," said archaeologist Gšran Gruber of the National Heritage Board in Sweden, who worked on the excavation. "But if that's the way the Stone Age people thought about it, I can't say."

I hate to be the one to say this, but I hope they can do some kind of residue analysis on that thing.

What I hate about stories like this is they show only one picture from just one perspective.  Obviously is a potentially interesting artifact, but I want to see it from all sides, top and bottom before I decide it is something worthy of my attention span or is just another figment of an over eager imagination.

this certainly is not the first Phallic artifact ever found, nor the earliest, but somehow I would not put this in the same category with others I have seen that seem more likely to have "served a purpose" =).  this one is actually quite small - whether the ruler in the image is in inches or cm (not identified) - it seems to be on the less ambitious side.  Other items I have seen 9(nlucding pestles that clearly seem to have phallic shapes) are significantly larger and more likely to have provided a fulfilling experience if used for anything beyond symbolism.

"this one is actually quite small"

It's cold up there in Sweden.

But yeah, what marehart said. They said it was kind of pointy on end, and if you look at the head of the thing it looks like there's some kind of sharp edge to it. My initial reaction was that it was some kind of billet, but that doesn't sound as cool as ancient dildo.

Looks to me that the scale is in cm, as there is a 2m icon on the ruler - suggesting that it may have been part of a longer rule; plus there are ten divisions between every numbered division. So, from that standpoint, it is a bit on the small side if given that the average male measures ~14 cm (see Wikipedia).

Maybe it was based on a visitor from Flores!

Stimulus is in the hand and/or mind of the beholder, whether it be a billet or a sex toy..who's to say, exactly??
