James Madison University Archaeological Field School      May 14th-June 15th 2007 

 

James Madison’s Montpelier located in Orange County Va.  Dr. Clarence Geier and Matthew Reeves, Co-directors. Front yard area was excavated in search of post holes based on an early fence line, with hopes of reconstructing the fence line. 

 

RECENT EMPLOYMENT

 

James Madison University                                            Feb 17th 2009- June 20th 2010

Crew Chief of Phase I and II excavation of Cedar Creek Battle Field Area located at Belle Grove; Middletown, Va and Ramseur’s Tract located in Fishers Hill, Va.  Site includes Civil War encampments, battle lines, earthworks, farmsteads and early woodland sites. Trained undergraduate students in Phase I and II techniques, completed lab work, participated in metal detecting surveying and helped with daily and final reports.  Experience with topographic maps and total station work.  

 

URS                                                                                Nov 30th 2008 -Feb 10th 2009

Phase I excavation of Fayetteville Pipeline Express located in Searcy, AR, Oxford, MS and surrounding areas. (Project #22240692) Participated in shovel test pit excavation and pedestrian surveys.  Collected and identified pre-historic and historic artifacts and sites. 

 

URS                                                                                 Sept 30th-Nov 21st 2008

Phase III excavation of Late Archaic/Late Paleo-Indian site located in Somerset, OH. (Project #33Pe807) Participated in excavating 5x5 meter blocks down to sterile subsoil. Photographed and mapped all excavation areas. Excavated features within the units when necessary. Also performed total station work.

 

James Madison University                                             May-July 2008

Cedar Creek Battle Field Area located at Belle Grove; Middletown, Va.  Participated in pedestrian surveys, Phase I test pitting, total station work, metal detecting and mapping of structures and earth works. Helped with daily reports.  Investigated area for evidence of Civil War and pre-historic sites.

 

The Frontier Culture Museum; Staunton, Va. Participated in pedestrian surveys and Phase I shovel test pits. Investigated area for evidence of pre-historic and Civil War sites.

Civil War battlefields of Fisher’s Hill, Toms Brook, New Market and Cedar Creek located in Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Participated in Phase I shovel test pit and pedestrian surveys. Identified and documented military sites, farmsteads, support structures, roads and pre-historic sites.

 

 

ARCHAEOLOGY EXPERIENCE

 

Undergraduate Student Teaching Assistant for Archaeology 197 at James Madison University Fall Semester 2007.

Organized field projects; trained undergraduate students in basic techniques of pedestrian surveys and Phase I shovel test pits. 

 

Field Assistant, Ellwood Plantation Project for National Park Service  Oct 2007  

Dr. Clarence Geier, Principal Investigator.  

Directed teams of students involved with locating and documenting a complex of 18th and 19th century roads enclosing Ellwood Plantation on the Wilderness Battlefield in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.

 

Internship for Montpelier at James Madison University           Aug-Dec 2006

Director: Matthew Reeves

Participated in cleaning, cataloging and entering artifacts into a database.  Concentration of internship focused in the area of nail and metal identification.
